This practice is also sometimes referred to as a “gong bath” because participants are “bathed” in meditation gong sound waves. The goal of “gong meditation” is usually therapeutic but its deeper goal is awareness and non-judgmental appreciation of the present moment

  1. Select the Right Gong: Choose a gong that suits your purpose. Gongs come in various sizes and materials, each producing different tones and harmonics. Experiment with different gongs to find one that resonates with the sound you want to create.

  2. Set Up: Place the gong on a stand or hang it securely, ensuring that it's at a comfortable height for you to play. Make sure there's enough space around the gong for sound to resonate and propagate.

  3. Gong Mallet: Use a gong mallet or striker designed for gongs. The type of mallet you choose can also affect the sound produced, so experiment with different mallets if possible.

  4. Stance: Stand or sit comfortably in front of the gong with your mallet in hand. Your stance should be relaxed, allowing you to move freely.

  5. Striking Technique: There are various techniques for striking the gong, and the choice depends on the desired sound and style. Here are a few common techniques:

    • Center Strike: This involves striking the gong near its center, producing a clear and focused sound.
    • Edge Strike: Striking closer to the edge of the gong can produce a brighter and more shimmering sound.
    • Rolling Strike: Move the mallet in a circular motion around the edge of the gong for a continuous, evolving sound.
  1. Intensity: Adjust the force and intensity of your strike to control the volume and resonance of the sound. A soft strike creates a gentle sound, while a more forceful strike produces a louder, more dramatic effect.

  2. Listening: Pay close attention to the sound as you play the gong. Listen to the harmonics and overtones, and be mindful of the way the sound evolves and interacts with the space.

  3. Duration: Decide how long you want the gong sound to last. You can strike the gong once for a short burst of sound or create a sustained sound by repeatedly striking it.

  4. Breathing and Relaxation: Maintain a relaxed and steady breath as you play the gong. This helps you stay in control and produce a more consistent and harmonious sound.
